It’s actually a very safe, controlled situation. The dude with the biceps in the red T-shirt is one of our sons, Josh, Lead Instructor in Outdoor Pursuits Company ‘Little Big Adventures’. The rope attached to my climbing harness will carry a couple of tons, it’s professionally attached to a deep rooted tree and an additional cable is being held by my capable Instructor.
Am I scared? Not particularly. I can descend at a leisurely pace, enjoying the view, knowing I’m in good hands!
And yes of course I’m thinking Scripture as usual, a number of references. Like where David speaks of God’s ‘strong right arm’, or the beautiful promise in Isaiah 41v13 where God assures those who trust Him, ‘I am the Lord your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.’
And again in the Gospels where Jesus reaches out to touch and befriend the leper, or takes Jairus’ daughter by the hand and brings her back to life. Not to mention the famous episode where Peter starts to sink in the stormy sea and cries out in fear, whereupon the Master grabs him and helps him back to the boat.
We regularly face all kinds of new, challenging situations in life and it’s natural to be at the least apprehensive if not plain scared. Christians find extra courage in knowing that ultimately we’re in the strong and good hands of our Saviour. He’s got us. We’ll make it through.
Shortly after this abseil and in a different location I was noticing some small children, toddlers reaching up for their Mum or Dad to lift them, carry them, protect them. And I thought how, although we should always be trying to mature in life and faith, in a sense we are always children, needing the comfort and help of our Father in heaven. We can be strong to grow and hopefully help others when we ourselves accept grace and help from above.
When we realise we’re in good hands and are happy to be there!
