However I do appreciate that a lot of people have worked very hard so I can stroll into the supermarket and easily pick up all I need. It’s one reason I love the Harvest celebrations each year when we give thanks for our ‘daily bread’ and praise the Creator for the seasons and all His loving care.
2nd October 2025 was the holiest day in the Jewish year, ‘Yom Kippur’, the ‘Day of Atonement’. It dates from the time of Moses and was the one day of the year the High Priest was permitted to go behind the curtain into the ‘Holy of Holies’. He took with him the blood of sacrificed animals to seek forgiveness for the sins of the people. It was a busy day of elaborate ritual for him while the people observed a strict Sabbath and did nothing.
For Christians it’s a reminder of our Lord Jesus. The New Testament book of Hebrews makes it clear that He is the greatest High Priest Who made atonement for us on the cross. He did so by shedding His lifeblood.
We could do nothing. He did it all.
What should we do in response? We can only live in gratitude and obedience, trusting and serving the One Who loves us and gave Himself for us. Let’s do so with all our hearts!
Happy Harvest!
