The New Testament predicts a day when for many people that trend will be reversed and not as a movie stunt or trip on a jet to New York or Australia. Much more spectacular than that.
We’re promised the Son of God will return in glory to judge evil and gather His people to Himself.
What an inspiring picture from Christ and His Apostles that one day we’ll no longer be hindered by the sad and painful circumstances of this present, imperfect world but called to rise and soar through the clouds to meet the Saviour in the skies!
Some may see this as figurative, others as literal but the intention is clearly to encourage us. Suffering and death are not the end of the story. Jesus said, ‘My sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish; no-one can snatch them out of my hand.’
The promises of the Bible have inspired countless hymns and songs over the centuries. One of them echoes Paul’s words to his Christian friends in 1st Thessalonians:
‘When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound…. On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise and the glory of His resurrection share, when the saved of earth shall gather to their home beyond the skies and the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there!’
That is the hope of every Christian. It helps us to face present challenges with faith and courage and joyful anticipation of the day when God will make all things new.
Get set to fly!
