Reverence for our Maker is not the end of wisdom but it’s a good start. When we have reverence for the One Who is all-powerful Who rules over all and before Whom we must one day stand judgement we are more likely to have respect for what He has made, the environment and other living things. We might be more inclined to want to know and follow any guidelines He has given.
But that’s the problem. We don’t! We desire the forbidden fruit. We break His commandments and our own. We idolise ourselves and other created things and before long we find ourselves sinking in the vicious darkness of narcissism and greed. So we need help.
What good news then is Christmas!
That Almighty God didn’t wipe us out or simply leave us to do it ourselves but chose to rescue us from our own worst tendencies to enjoy reconciliation and life with Him forever.
If He had simply spoken the word and made it happen we might be grateful, possibly even compliant. But look at the way He went about saving us.
Coming down, being born vulnerable in a stable, living humbly as one of us, doing good, showing compassion and finally offering His life in sacrifice to buy our forgiveness and freedom from sin. Here is why we may not only admire the Lord, but truly love Him.
At the very least we should be impressed. Here is our God, the Servant King, the Almighty come to us so humbly in flesh to rescue us. The people who knew and walked with Him in Galilee and Judea, the writers of the New Testament were much more than just impressed. They loved Him, surrendered their lives to serve Him and would urge us to do likewise.
So, ‘come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!’
