There is much to delight us but also times of very real challenge, sorrow and loss. In the face of uncertainty and changing circumstances Christians are blessed with some foundational ‘fixed points’ in Scripture, not least the assurance of God’s love in Christ.
Whatever is happening in our lives right now let’s remember some well attested facts: the cross was sufficient, the tomb was empty, the Spirit has been poured out and Christ promised He would return. Any given day, through laughter or tears, we can choose to give thanks for these evidences of His love!
A friend of mine calls Ps 107 her ‘go to’ Psalm, a Bible passage she returns to frequently for comfort and wisdom. It has this little chorus line which is repeated a number of times: ‘Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men…’
In between we’re given various pictures of how God helps us in our need. A favourite one for seafarers is found in v23-30 which actually foretells quite uncannily Jesus calming the storm on Galilee!
I was reading the Psalm again recently and noticed how it gives at least seven aspects of the love and salvation God brings about when we trust in Jesus. Take time to read the whole Psalm for yourself and see if you can spot Redemption, Guidance, Liberation, Healing, Rescue, Provision and Justice!
It could be the story of God’s ancient people in the Exodus, it could just as easily be the testimony of every believer today!
