Did you hear about the Olympic marathon runner who finished the race despite having a broken leg? Team GB’s Rose Harvey showed amazing courage and stamina to keep going despite the pain. In an interview she said she kept thinking about her fiancé Charlie who was waiting to welcome her across the line.
We live a somewhat surreal existence in this part of the world these days. From the stands or the comfort of an armchair we spectate our favourite sports or dramas, flicking channels to check progress on the wars and disasters around the world. Armed conflict, domestic abuse, civil unrest, murder. Hard to tell sometimes if we’re watching the news or a horror movie!
In Mark 13 the Lord Jesus predicted the destruction of Jerusalem and the spread of the Christian Gospel to all nations amid a backdrop of heaving darkness. He has brought light, hope, love and the possibility of reconciliation. The enemy stirs up opposition, hatred and cruel violence.
The Church of Christ cannot afford to be mere spectators in such times. We need to get on the track and finish the race He has set before us!
So come to church as often as you can. Pray constantly. Look for opportunities to share meaningfully with others the truth and love of our Saviour. Be who He calls us to be!
We dare not become complacent. We must keep going, even if it’s difficult or painful in the short term. Who cares if we’re first or last, whether or not we get a medal.
It will be worth it just to see our Master’s face, to run gratefully into His arms and hear Him say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’
