The ambulance brought her to hospital and I sat by her side until morning, aware that she was hanging in the balance between life and death. Around 6am she opened her eyes and looked at me. Her right side was paralysed but she raised her left hand and stroked my face. Then she spoke and this is what she said.
‘We have an anchor.’
With the help of our ‘Anchor’ we got through seven months of hospital during Covid and extensive rehab and almost five years now of adapting to life with some changes. With faith in our Lord and Saviour and Hazel’s battery powered wheelchair we’re for Germany next week and Scotland in the summer and Hazel is here tonight sitting right over there.
‘We have an anchor’. It’s been the motto of the Boy’s Brigade for generations. It comes from the Bible, Hebrews 6v11, ‘We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast.’ We’ll sing those words before the end of this service. But Hazel and the BB are not the only ones to consider Christian faith as an anchor for life.
Did you hear King Charles address the Congress in America last week? About thirteen minutes into his speech he said this, ‘For many here and for myself, the Christian faith is a firm anchor and daily inspiration that guides us not only personally but together as members of our community.’
The hope found in Christian faith is an anchor, a fixed point of security in life’s storms, not because it’s based on a merely human tradition or institution but because it’s based on a living person, on Jesus the Son of God.
Our Anchor is the One Who loves us, Who came to earth and gave His life to save us from our sins, Who rose triumphant over death, Who rules over heaven and earth and will come again in glory to punish evil and gather His followers to share His resurrection, life and wholeness forever.
Even now He is present with us by His Spirit.
Here is hope for the future and the help we need in the present.
We have an anchor indeed!
