The Perfect Line

This is one of our sons, Josh.  He’s an Outdoor Pursuits Instructor.

He and his pals are into climbing, kayaking, mountain biking and archery.

That means that even in Winter, when many are wanting to stay indoors by the fire, they are happily out hiking in the snow-covered hills!  Some people are content to photograph a rushing river as nice scenery.  They want to get in their boats and ride the white water!

Josh tells me it’s vitally important to steer a good ‘line’ through rough water, if you want to enjoy the thrills and survive to share the video.  Otherwise you could hit the rocks, get stuck in a ‘hole’, or even be ‘spat out’ by the river, quite possibly upside down.

So beginners will study the manuals on technique, and the guidebooks which map and grade rivers into various levels of difficulty.   They’ll be careful to follow the line taken by the Instructor.  Even experienced kayakers will often walk down the riverbank to assess a stretch before taking to the water.  No one wants to lead others into danger.

These things make a pretty neat parallel with life generally and some teachings found in the Bible.

Jesus warned against following the uncareful crowd breezing down the broad route leading to destruction.  Watch in case you and your friends are unintentionally leading each other into trouble and heartache and worse, judgement!

He urged His listeners to seek the ‘narrow’ way, what Josh and his mates would call the ‘mega-line’, navigating the hazards while maximizing the enjoyment.  This not-always-obvious, sometimes difficult route is worth finding for it leads, according to Christ, to ‘life’.  ( Matthew 7 v 13-14 )

The ‘line’ for each of our ‘rivers’ is found by trusting Him as our Saviour and Life-Coach, following carefully His instructions as recorded in the Bible.

So do the research carefully.  Choose firmly the ‘Jesus’ line.

And enjoy your river!

Meanwhile enjoy some kayaking action from Co. Wicklow, Ireland:
