The blues, or righteous frustration.
It creeps up on us over time.
Another war or disaster. Another scandal.
Another flock of panic stricken victims, seeking a better land.
It’s not that we don’t feel compassion.
It’s just that we’re tired.
Tired of human wickedness, failure and compromise.
Tired of people suffering and children crying.
Tired of living in a broken world.
Like the author of the ‘pilgrim song’ Psalm 120 -
He feels he’s been living ‘too long’ among deceitful warmongers.
He longs for the peace and safety of God’s Temple in Jerusalem.
He hungers for a sense of God’s reassuring presence.
And most probably he senses his own need for atonement.
Children of God are never completely ‘at home’ this side of heaven.
However we can taste the beginnings of eternity:
The assurance of sins forgiven through Jesus.
The daily needs met by our generous Father.
Courage, wisdom, patience, joy and love from the Spirit within.
We may not be home quite yet, but every day and every prayer brings us closer.
We are by grace pilgrims. We are enroute for God’s dwelling.
And so, despite everything,
We sing.
