As winter storms move in on this part of the world, I’m reminded of the description of the Holy Spirit coming on the gathered believers in Acts chapter 2 with ‘a sound like the blowing of a violent wind’. (v2) May we, who by grace are members of Christ’s Church, ever be open and submissive to the filling and direction of the divine Comforter/Helper. May our lives be fruitful with every good thing and a powerful witness to Jesus as a result!
Prayer:
Lord, I hear the wind racing in the chimney,
The coal and turf flicker in the hearth, flames bright.
Glad to be inside, I pray for your Spirit to come,
To invade my heart with a burning purity and fresh rushing power,
That I might rest secure this night as a child of God,
And go forth in the new day equipped as a fruitful witness.
Lord, thank you for the pictures and promises of your Word,
The bubbling spring of living water, the gallons of top-class wine,
The living, heaven-sent Gift to be poured out abundantly,
That those who hunger and thirst for righteousness may be filled,
And your church be a force for good on Earth.
So yes, Lord, pour out your Spirit on your people here!
Fill our souls to overflowing with the wonders of Christ,
The always dependable grace, the deep and precious love,
Reclaiming, redeeming, renewing, replenishing, reviving.
Fill us with a common heart and purpose, that with all our various gifts,
We might become a united and ever-growing fellowship,
One People of peace, One Body, yours!
For your glory!
Come Holy Spirit, blow, bubble, burn! Fan us to infectious life in Christ!
