Today I rebooted ‘Dad’s taxi’ and took my student daughter to Dublin Airport. Her flight was six am which meant we were rising to drive not so much early in the morning as in the pitch dark middle of the night! As I write she’s boarding a train somewhere in Bavaria for the next stage of her journey.
Stretches of the motorway were quiet and empty. On the way back I noted the roadworkers finishing the night shift, beginning to clear the traffic cones in preparation for the daytime traffic. I pulled into our driveway with the first grey light of dawn, giving thanks once more for guardian angels and what people of faith sometimes call ‘journeying mercies’.
Reflecting in daylight on those shadowy figures on the motorway I tip my hat to anyone who works nights, in whatever capacity.
And I remember what the speaker said in church last Sunday evening.
Reading from Psalm 121 they pointed out that five times in just six verses God ‘the Lord’ is said to ‘watch over’ His people. Furthermore, while I was tired and happy to climb back into bed for an hour this morning, the Psalmist assures us, ‘He Who watches over you… will neither slumber nor sleep.’
Our Father in Heaven is awake 24/7, ever watchful. And as usual His Word is both comforting and challenging – let us be neither paralysed with worry nor disobedient to His commands!
We are never alone.
So wherever you are on your journey just now, think on this:
‘The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.’
