For many of us have certain values and convictions but are fed up being branded ‘phobic’ or ‘bigots’. We’re fine thank you and very much like to be kind and nice to people.
Everyone needs to wake up and realise there are constant agendas at work and we are frequently being conditioned to think and feel certain ways. This is one reason we have seen such massive changes in public opinion in recent years, some probably more helpful than others. However we need to think carefully about what we’re told and not just let ourselves be carried along with the current trend. Trends can be wrong.
OK so here’s a question: If Jesus really was the Son of God was He bigoted or phobic when He urged people to ‘repent’ of attitudes and actions our Maker judges to be wrong so that we can be forgiven and live in His generous love forever? (And yes, absolutely, I have an agenda, I am seeking to influence you to question the popular atheistic trend and consider following Jesus!)
And if He was/is such a mixed up narrow minded person why did/do so many people gladly follow Him? Could it have been the way He combined such uncompromising moral truth with radical charity and personal self-sacrifice? Like feeding the hungry, going without food or sleep himself to heal long queues of sick folk and help release those with binding behavioural issues? Like taking unhurried time with individuals and families, embracing lepers, weeping with his friends in the cemetery, feeling their pain before raising their loved one from the dead? Could it be how He listens to our prayers and helps us today?
People sometimes talk about someone being ‘a hard act to follow’ and that could be said of Jesus. It’s a huge challenge, but it’s also the best one – the highest morals with the deepest compassion. Let them call us what they like. We will follow Him.
PS: Usain Bolt and I don’t immediately appear to have a lot in common. He is six foot five, Jamaican and a fantastic athlete and I…well, I’m not. But we agree on the issue highlighted below. So do Gary Lineker and many others. Check it out.
